First Grade students read “Fireflies for Nathan” by Shulamith Oppenheim in their HM books.
We talked about how to create people, portraits and tell a story with just a picture.
Students used oil pastel then watercolor to create a resist so their fireflies would pop off the page. They looked at images from the book for reference and could recreate one of those or do one of their own. Coloring hard is the key to success when doing resist projects.
